Pioneer Alley Revitalization
Ketchikan Pioneers of Alaska is working to restore the U.S. Customs House/Pioneer Hall AND revitalize Pioneer Alley. Since 1900, Pioneer Alley has served the community as a shortcut between Front and Main Streets. Over the years, the Alley has changed its shape, with buildings disappearing and new structures erected along with a parking lot. Pedestrians have long lamented that passage through the Alley is like playing “Dodge a Car”. Lighting is an issue, too.

Ketchikan Pioneers of Alaska received grant funds and volunteer energy to develop a design for Pioneer Alley. The design makes for a safe, clean byway that residents and visitors can enjoy. Take a look and see what we have in mind below.
Thanks to the Pioneer Alley neighbors, including City of Ketchikan, Coastal Realty, Ketchikan Performing Arts, The Distillery, Ketchikan Pioneers of Alaska, Ketchikan Area Arts and Humanities Council, Front Street Alaska for participating in the planning sessions. Other neighbors involved include the Gilmore Hotel, KIC, and Redman Hall. Thanks to our funders to make this project happen. They are First Bank and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. And, thanks to the volunteers with Ketchikan Pioneers of Alaska. Everyone made this design plan a reality. Now we move forward to implementation!
